Conil de la Frontera in Andalusia is situated between Cadiz and Tarifa on the Costa de la Luz. Conil belongs to the "Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos", the route of the white villages, which are characteristic for the south of Andalusia.

The village of Conil de la Frontera used to live in the past mainly from tuna fishing according to the old tradition of the Almadraba, where they catch the up to 3m long fish with huge nets and by hand.

The atmosphere of the village has now become more international and distinguishes itself from other places on this coast. One reason for this might be the several language schools that have settled to Conil, attracting students to learn Spanish from all over the world. Accordingly, the night life in the many bars and clubs is excellent with a very international mix of people.

Particularly beautiful are the small alleys with their white houses in the old center of Conil. All ways within Conil can be walked, leave your car parked.

The history of Conil goes back until the Phoenicians, who first settled here. Biggest attractions are the former watch tower Torre de Guzman, refering to the former defensive character of the village, and the old center.

Just outside Conil to the north you can find the port of Conil. Behind the port there are the Calas de Roche, the little bays of Roche, counting to the most beautiful beaches in Andalusia. You can enter these little bays via the stone stairs leading down from the cliffs.

Surfing in Conil de la Frontera - Waves, spots and beaches

The area of Conil de la Frontera is the epicenter of surfing in Andalusia. The climate in the winter months is still perfect for surfing. The best waves are to be found in between October and May.

The city beach of Conil, the Playa Los Bateles, is not perfectly facing the Atlantic swell. Still, 1,5m waves are nothing rare here. No stones in the water make surfing here really harmless.

About 5km south of Conil the best surfing beach of the area is called El Palmar. Since the bay here experiences a deflection, El Palmar is the top beach with perfect alignment towards the incoming swell and most wave days over the year. At weekends you can count up to 300 surfers in the water. Several surf schools offer courses for all skill levels and surfboard rental.

Kitesurfing in Conil de la Frontera - beaches, winds, kitesurf school

You can kitesurf in Conil de la Frontera all year long, except in the high season months of July and August when the beach is reserved for swimmers. Then there is still plenty of other spots where kitesurfing is allowed at any time.

You'll never see as many kitesurfers in the water here as you would in Tarifa. So if you want to have the entire beach for yourself and enjoy smoother water and more moderate winds, then Conil is the perfect spot for you.
Between October and May kitesurfing in the winter waves is the best.

In Conil there is a kitesurf station, where you can rent material or take lessons for all levels.

Beaches of Conil de la Frontera

The beaches of Conil de la Frontera are amongst the nicest in all Andalusia. The fine, white sand will satisfy even the most demanding visitors.

We recommend to use enough sun screen at any time of the day, because the Andalusian sun can cause sunburns quicker than you think.

To cool down from the heat there is nothing more refreshing than cristal-blue water of the Atlantic ocean. It wan't be any warmer than 20°C in the summer, but neither any colder than 16°C in the winter. It is recommendable to wear a neopren suit for water sports.

The water here is very clean and there's no strong currents to be aware of. Jelly fish and other unpleasant marine animals are not to be found.

Playa Los Bateles

The Playa Los Bateles is the city beach of Conil de la Frontera and extends along the beach promenade til the river Rio Salado marking the southern end of Conil.

Windsurfers and kitesurfers prefer this beach for its flat water conditions and moderate current.

Naturally, this is the busiest beach of Conil, as most tourists walk staight from their accommodation to this closest beach. The Playa Los Bateles has the perfect infrastructure with beach bars, restaurants, showers and toilets. Bay watch towers are installed to protect the swimmers.

Playa La Fontanilla

The northern extension of Playa Los Bateles is named Playa Fontanilla. This beach is one the cleanest and nicest of the entire Costa de la Luz.

Guarded parkings, some great fish restaurants, showers and toilets and even a camping site are being offered here.

Without a visible separation, the Playa Fontanilla is followed by the Playa Fuente de Gallo. We're talking about more than 2km og the finest sand beach here.

Climate & Weather in Chiclana

While temperatures in the summer at the Andalusian coast are comfortably warm, it may be unbearably hot just 20km further in the country. Seville, for example, is used to have above 40°C every day while on the coast you only feel 25°C.

In winter time it hardly gets any colder than 16°C, except for the nights which could end up being around 10°C. The temperatures also depend on the wind direction: Levante brings warmer air from the land, Poniente brings cool air form the sea.

The average humidity in summer is around 30%, in the winter it is above 50%.

The probability of rain is very low apart from January til April. Statistically the Costa de la Luz provides more than 300 days of sunshine per year. In fact, rain is always welcome to assure the water supply in summer.
